Mack Newsom, age 99, passed away September 11, 2021 in Magnolia, Texas. A celebration of his life will be held 11 A.M., Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at Walters Funeral Home, Centerville, Texas. Rev. David Maulsby will officiate the service. There will be no public graveside service. A brief visitation will take place prior to the service from 10 A.M. to service time at the funeral home.
Victor McKee “Mack” Newsom was born one of twelve children to Joe & Maggie (McKee) Newsom on March 21, 1922 in the Ninevah Community of Leon County, Texas. He joined the U.S. Army January 1, 1943 and was a member of the 509th Composite group where he served as a sergeant in the 393rd Bombardment Squadron. He worked as an airplane mechanic and B-29 engine specialist on Tinian and at Wendover Airfield, and was also deployed to Cuba. He was a member of the ground crew of the B-29 Silverplate plane Next Objective and was honorably discharged November 21, 1945.
Mack married Marguerite Walters December 4, 1948 in Harris County, Texas and they shared sixty-six happy years together until her passing in 2015. He had worked for the Houston Beverage Company for over forty years. Mack was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who will be missed dearly.
Mack was preceded in death by both of his parents; wife, Marguerite (Walters) Newsom; son, Craig Newsom; brothers, Barney, Cyrus, Deward, Fred, Howard & John “Juke” Newsom and sisters, Algernon “Bunky” Bassham, Dell Bell, Jackie Franks, Josie Newsom, Maggie Lou Yancey & Opal Brown.
Surviving family includes daughter, Terri Mathis (Kyle) of Hockley; grandsons, Kole Vallatini (Becca) of Bartlett, TN and Nick Vallatini (Jeanine) of Spring; great-grandsons, Ethan Anderson of Klein & Nathan, Ryan & Cohen Jonakin of Bartlett, TN, as well as a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
Walters Funeral Home, Centerville, Texas is in charge of arrangements.
