Roy Simpson, age 94 passed away in Montgomery, Texas on October 7, 2017. He was born October 27, 1922 in Robbins, Texas. His parents were William Theron Simpson and Mary Lee (Porter) Simpson. He left high school in the eleventh grade, in 1942, and joined the U.S. Army. He and his twin brother, Ray, served in the tank division in Germany during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart during his time of service. He was wounded when his tank was hit.
He married Joy Payne in 1961. They lived in the Houston area most of their lives. Roy worked over 30 years for American Can. In 1979 the Simpsons moved to the Old Bowling Community of Leon County. He worked for Leon Gas which is based in Flynn, Texas for 21 years. After retiring, he enjoyed working his cows on his land. He always had a garden each year. He mowed his own grass up until recently and it could be said of him that he “just enjoyed working!”
Roy was preceded in death by his parents; an older brother, Walter Simpson; a sister, Varene Cude; his twin brother, Ray Simpson and a grandson, Donald Keith “Bubba” Smith. Surviving family includes his wife of 56 years, Joy Simpson of Montgomery; son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Pam Smith of Flynn; daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and David Fuller of Montgomery; a sister, Jimmie Blauret of Houston; three grandchildren, Amanda Wills and her husband, Michael, Shelly Smyth and her husband, Kevin and Lori Kelley and her husband, Brit and eight great grandchildren: Drew, Haleigh, McKenna, Cameron, Kaili, Clair, Jenna, and Britton.
A graveside funeral service will be held at the Concord Cemetery at 2 PM on Wednesday, October 11, 2017. David Fuller will officiate. A visitation is scheduled for October 10th,Tuesday evening, from 6 pm until 8 pm at the Walters Funeral Home in Centerville.
Serving as pallbearers: Michael Wills, Andrew Wills, Kevin Smyth, Cameron Smyth, Brit Kelley (& his son Britton) and David Fuller.
The family of Roy Simpson has requested that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association National Office, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 27, Chicago, IL 60601.
