Phillip "Phil" Mathews Farris, affectionately known as Papa to those who loved him most, peacefully departed this earthly life and went to heaven on January 26, 2025, in Bryan, Texas. Phil, a dedicated educator, mentor, and beloved family man, was born on March 24, 1941, in Pharr, Texas, to Ira "Owen" and Juanita (Mathews) Farris. While his passing leaves an immeasurable void, comfort is found in the legacy of love and wisdom that will forever live on in the hearts of those that knew him.
Phil was a man of quiet strength, a leader by example, and a steadfast pillar of the Farris family. He was a man's man-tough, honest, and unapologetically himself. His wisdom and common-sense philosophies, lovingly coined as "Philisms," were legendary among those closest to him. Phil had a knack for retelling detailed stories from his youth, most included some sort of predicament he found himself in and somehow successfully made his way out of, leaving those listening in disbelief and laughter. His love of family, nature, sports, hunting with his sons, and the simple pleasures of life-coffee in the morning, a good meal, and his many pets -defined his days. But above all, his heart belonged to one person: Nancy, the love of his life. Their journey together spanned an extraordinary 71 years and was filled with love, devotion, and unwavering commitment.
A dedicated educator, Phil earned both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in education, along with his Administrator Certificate. He began his career as a coach and teacher, later becoming a respected principal and curriculum administrator. He led not with loud words but with quiet conviction, he was a straight arrow, he was stern but fair. Phil enriched the lives of countless students, teachers, and colleagues. After retiring from education, Phil continued his calling to serve others as a probation officer in Brazoria County, proving that his dedication to bettering lives knew no bounds.
Though he was a firm disciplinarian in his younger years, age softened Phil, allowing his deep pride in his children and grandchildren to shine through in tearful reflections. His family was his greatest joy, and nothing made him prouder than watching his children and grandchildren grow into the people they were meant to be. Phil carried with him a strong moral compass, unwavering values, and a love that will echo through generations.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Ida Frances Weir, Willa Jean Collavo, and Owen Allen "Fella" Farris.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of sixty-one years, Nancy Farris, affectionately known as Ahmi, of Centerville; their cherished children, Lisa Ellen Farris Bliss (David) of Southlake, Phillip "Devin" Farris of Centerville, Lori Farris Potter (Jason) of Mansfield, Mark Allen Farris (Amanda) of Houston, and Darren Kyle Farris (Leigh) of Missouri City; and Papa's treasured grandchildren, Phillip, Allison, Drew, Kailey, Ashleigh, Stone, Lexi, Luke (Bailey), Kameryn, Kendyll, Deacon, Owen, Aiden, and Teagan. He is also survived by his sisters, Sue Moore of San Marcos and Cydne Farris of West Virginia, along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.
Phil's family will gather privately to honor his remarkable life, sharing stories, laughter, and tears as they celebrate the man who meant so much to so many. Though he is no longer physically present, his spirit will live on in every life he touched. God broke the mold after Phil was born and those that were lucky enough to know him are better off because of it. God grant him eternal peace, and may his loved ones find comfort in knowing he is watching over them, forever their guiding light.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Phil's honor to the Wounded Warrior Project, ASPCA, and St. Jude Children's Hospital.
Final arrangements are under the care of Walters Funeral Home, Centerville, Texas.
