A homegoing celebration service for Mrs. Mattie Hopkins, age 95, of Garland, and formerly, Leon County, will be held at 12 Noon, Saturday, July 7, 2018 at the Two-Mile United Methodist Church in Leona, Texas. Interment will follow in the Two-Mile Cemetery adjacent to the church. A brief visitation will take place from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M., Saturday, July 7th at the Walters Funeral Home in Centerville, Texas.
Mrs. Mattie Louise (Levels) Hopkins was born June 15, 1923 to the parentage of Mr. Carlos and Ora Levels in Leon County, Texas. She received her formal education at Middle Branch Community School and St. Paul School in Oakwood, Texas. At an early age, she confessed her faith in Christ and united with the Middle Branch Church and later moved her membership to Two-Mile United Methodist Church where she remained a member until her death. She was very active in her church serving as church secretary, youth Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, choir member, member of Harold of Jericho, president of the Women Society and wherever else she was needed. Mattie was a homemaker for many years. She loved to garden, pick berries and preserve her own jams until her health no longer allowed her to do so.
Mattie met and married her husband, Jimmie Lee Hopkins, on October 23, 1941, and to this union nine children were born. She was preceded in death by both of her parents; brothers, Jimmie & Goldie Levels; sister, Evelyn Williams; daughters, Josie Lee & Betty Louise Hopkins and sons-in-law, Alfred Lee West & Willie Roy Carrington. Mattie was loved by all who came in contact with her. She leaves to cherish her memories two sons, Jimmy Ed Hopkins & Joe Lee Hopkins (Vanessa) all of Dallas; five daughters, Vera Carrington of Centerville; Linda Lee White (Lue) of Dallas, Ora Lee West of Balch Springs, Diane Sherwood (Joe) of Garland and Grace Evelyn Johnson (Jack, Jr.) of Dallas; sisters, Maxine Kizzee & Lula Mae Levels; twelve grandchildren; a host of great grandchildren & great, great grandchildren; special sister-in-law, Mozell Levels and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends.
Arrangements are entrusted to Walters Funeral Home in Centerville, Texas.
