Mary Jane Leathers

December 3, 1934 — February 12, 2024

Mary Jane (Lanier) Leathers was born on Monday, December 3, 1934 in Palestine, Texas. She was the daughter of Gus Myers Lanier and Daisey Marie (Lummus) Lanier of Marquez, Texas. She went home to be with her Lord & Savior at the age of 89, peacefully surrounded by loved ones.


Mary Jane grew up primarily in Marquez, Texas. Except for the families times in Austin, Texas, while her father served as a Texas State Representative. Mary Jane graduated from Centerville High School. She married Sam Wayne Leathers on October 4, 1952. They resided in the Guy Store Community, where they raised two sons and one daughter. Mary Jane worked for the Douglas Alumni School, John H Mallard Attorney's Office, and taking care of her children, later grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her first passion was the Lord. She was a member of the Baptist Church where she was saved. Her other greatest passion was her family to who she was deeply devoted. Her home was always full of warmth and love. You could always find her with one of her many grandchildren or great-grandchildren in her home. She loved flowers and was well known for her love of gardening.


Mary Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Wayne Leathers; mother and father, Gus & Daisey Lanier; brothers and sister, Sydney, Gus and Daisey Jo. Mary Jane is survived by her children, Andrew Wayne Leathers (Carrie) of Centerville, Texas, Jerry Lanier Leathers (Suzanne) of Centerville, Texas, and Holly Leathers Wood (Gary) of Centerville, Texas; grandchildren, Rachel Gonce (Brad) of Centerville, Texas, Britanie Stroh (Matt) of Gause, Texas, Shelia Ryder (Brent) of Buffalo, Texas, Tara Duvall (Enoch) of Centerville, Texas, Allison Moore (Gregg) of Gause, Texas, Pennie Graeber (Will) of Woodway, Texas, Cole Leathers of Lorena, Texas, Logan Leathers of Houston, Texas, Lance Wood (Lindsie) of Centerville, Texas, and Jericka Foster (Adam) of Centerville, Texas; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.


A funeral service for Mary Jane will be held 2 P.M., Saturday, February 17, 2024 at Walters Funeral Home, Centerville, Texas. Bro. Louis Mize will officiate the service. Interment will follow at New Salem Cemetery. A time of visitation and fellowship will take place Friday evening, February 16th, at Walters Funeral Home from 5 P.M. to 7 P.M.
