Lyndall Beverly Leathers

Lyndall Leathers was born at home in Centerville, Texas, on December 8, 1924, and passed away November 22, 2020 in Houston, TX at the age of 95. Her parents were Edgar and Kate Gresham Floyd of Centerville. After Lyndall graduated from Centerville High School in 1941, she attended Texas State College for Women in Denton (now TWU), graduating in 1945. She taught for several years in Leona and Cayuga high schools.

Lyndall married Frank Leathers, also of Centerville, in 1948 and they lived in Huntsville where Frank was attending Sam Houston State Teachers College on the GI Bill after serving in World War II. While in Huntsville, Lyndall taught at Dodge, a two-teacher rural Walker County school. After Frank’s graduation in 1950, they both taught at Woodville for several years, where their daughter Beverly was born.

Several years were spent in Austin while Frank pursued a PhD and where their son Larry was born. After living in Alvin, Port Arthur, and Lufkin, where Frank was an administrator in the public schools, they moved to Huntsville in 1969. Frank was affiliated with SHSU as Vice President.

Lyndall and Frank were always actively involved in the Methodist Church in every place they lived and Lyndall was a dedicated member of the UMW (United Methodist Women) and its numerous outreach programs to local and international missions. Frank and Lyndall started the greeting program at FUMC in Huntsville and would welcome all the new people to town and church by inviting them to lunch. They always supported the youth and children’s programs at the schools and churches where they lived.

Lyndall was a multi-talented caring person. Her literary skills were evident in her casual notes to friends celebrating birthdays and special occasions and in her proofreading/editor responsibility for all the church communications. You could always count on Lyndall for deviled eggs for any church gathering. She was also known and appreciated for making intricate and impressive baby gripping balls for all the new babies in her church community.

If you wanted a dress hem leveled, a good recipe for cheese grits, a manuscript edited, or if a strong shoulder was needed to help you through an emotional burden, Lyndall was the one to call on. She was not one to brag about these qualities; she never displayed an overt sentimentality; but there was a basic goodness in her that was unmistakable. She was a perfect example of a rock solid good soul who could be counted on when help was needed.

After Frank’s death in 2012, Lyndall continued to live at their home in Huntsville. Lyndall was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Gresham Floyd, and by infant granddaughter Nancy Nolan. She is survived by daughter Beverly and son Larry, as well as granddaughters Mira McCarty (Patrick), Ellen Leathers-Wishart and Katherine Nolan, and by great-grandchildren, Nora and Evan McCarty.

A public visitation will take place from 8 A.M. to 4 P.M., Friday, November 27, 2020 at Walters Funeral Home, Centerville, Texas. Private graveside services will be held the following day. A memorial birthday service is planned for December 8, 2021 at the family home on west St. Mary's Street, Centerville, Texas.
