James William Salter, Sr.

Funeral services for James William Salter, Sr., of Conroe and Leon County, have been scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Friday, November 1, 2019 at the Walters Funeral Home in Centerville, TX. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Bro. Bo Gunnels will officiate and burial will follow the service in the Salter Cemetery.

James Salter was born on April 2, 1939 in Houston, TX. His parents were Ralph Vernon Salter, Sr. and Bessie Jane (Williams) Salter. He was a member of the Pipe Fitters Local 211 out of Houston. It was his dream to retire to the country and be a farmer/rancher. He bought land in Leon County in 1975 and in 2000, he and his wife moved to their “Leon County place” where James lived his farm and ranch dream!

He was an avid hunter. He and his family gathered in the country at his home in Leon County, where they enjoyed getting together, visiting and eating with each other. James was a great husband, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather. He passed away on October 27, 2019 in Shenandoah, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Bessie Salter; a sister, Doris Salter; a daughter, Pamela L. Johnson; sister-in-law, Joann Salter and brother-in-law, Clyde Dear.

Surviving family includes his wife, Mary Frances (Maturin) Salter of Conroe; sons, James W. Salter II of Porter and Scott A. Salter and wife, Gloria, of Deer Park; daughters, Sherry G. Crawford and Rachelle L. Olds and her husband, Tracy, all of Conroe; sister, Betty Dear of Crockett and brother, Ralph V. Salter, Jr. of Cleveland, Texas. The surviving family also includes grandchildren, Jessica, Julye, Daniel, Richard, Candice, Christian, Carina, Matthew, Megan, Travis, Deanna, Kayla, Rebecca, Justin and Mitchell and numerous great grandchildren.
