James Lee "Jimmy" McCune, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2024, at the age of 84. Born on August 16, 1940, in San Antonio, Texas, he was a true Texan at heart, raised in Jewett, and spent most of his life there, with the exception of a decade lived in Houston.
Jimmy was the cherished son of Mac and Flora Bell (Wycuff) McCune and married the love of his life, Shirley Grimes, in 1966. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, love, and countless memories, welcoming their three children, and later grandchildren, into their hearts. Jimmy found immense joy in being surrounded by family, especially his fourteen great-grandchildren, whom he adored. He loved reading stories to them and was a devoted family man, always putting his loved ones first. Additionally, Jimmy shared a special bond with his dog, Lady. They were inseparable at home and it was apparent in the way Lady always followed Jimmy around that he was her forever friend.
An avid coin and arrowhead collector, Jimmy embraced his interests with passion, and he found solace in literature and poetry. He worked tirelessly at Nucor Steel, demonstrating his dedication as a provider and a hard worker, a testament to his unwavering commitment to his family.
Jimmy was preceded in death by both of his parents; son, Gerald "Keith" McCune; sisters, Peggy Venturella and Florece Barrier and maternal grandparents, Grandma & Pa Rae. Surviving family members include beloved wife, Shirley McCune of Marquez; children, Tammy Dennard (Bruce) of Huntsville and Shawn McCune of Marquez; daughter-in-law, Vicki Presswood of Huntsville; grandchildren, Logan McCune, Garret McCune (Kacie), Cason McCune (Catie), Shay Smith (Devin), Seth Noey (Karie), and Tate Jarzombek (Brice); great-grandchildren, Jase, Drew, Dawson, Brady, Rowen, Arthur, Wyatt, Charlie, Jett, "Baby McCune," Deyton, Dakota, Dylan, and Caroline; sister, Katie May (Don) of North Zulch; special dog, Lady; and a host of extended family and friends.
Jimmy McCune leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and the joy of family gatherings. He will be dearly missed, but we will remember him for his warm heart, infectious smile, and the countless stories shared around the dinner table.
Funeral services to celebrate Jimmy's life will take place 11 A.M., Monday, December 9, 2024 at Ephesus Baptist Church, near Marquez, Texas followed by burial in Sardis Cemetery.
