Jacquelyn "Jacqueie" Johnston Wakefield

Jacquelyn "Jacqueie" Johnston Wakefield was born on August 30, 1934 in Borger, TX. She was the daughter of Adrian "Johnny" and Neomia Johnston. She went home to be with the Lord on February 22, 2022 at the age of 87, surrounded by her loving family.

Jacqueie grew up in Quanah, TX and graduated from Quanah High School. Her philosophy in life was to focus on happiness, enjoying every minute with good people and good food. She never shied away from an opportunity to do just that, especially in service to her community, passionate that every person within reach had a great time. When Quanah High School stopped having school dances on campus, Jacqueie jumped into action, arranging with local shopkeepers to open their doors after hours and roll in a juke box full of danceable ‘45s for entertainment. When her class didn’t have enough money for a senior trip, she raised the funds herself, planning a five-day excursion to Colorado Springs, Colorado for all of her classmates. There was never a task too big or small for Jacqueie. And focusing on her community was always at the forefront.

On August 15th, 1959, Jacqueie married Julian Wakefield and moved to Centerville, TX, a community she loved deeply, where they raised 4 beautiful children, which were the true joy of her life. Jacqueie always said that the greatest accomplishment of her life was raising her children. Outside of being an incredible wife and mother, Jacqueie loved to volunteer her time. Some of her favorite projects she helped get off the ground were the local July 4th celebration, building an SPJST hall, getting a gazebo on the county square and volunteering with the PTA while her kids were in school. In 1975, Jacqueie started her own insurance agency, Wakefield Insurance Agency, on the square in Centerville, and later expanded to Madisonville. She loved the work she did there and felt it was another extension of serving and loving her community. Then, in 1989, she opened the Soda Shop in downtown Centerville. Ever the gracious hostess, creating a nostalgic restaurant for the community with an authentic soda fountain and marble tables brought her so much joy. Needless to say, no matter where she went, Jacqueie always created a warm, inviting and fun environment for all. And that was never truer than in her own home. She lived for family gatherings where she cooked incredible meals, hosting bridge games with her closest friends, tending to her flowers, traveling and shopping. She will be remembered for being a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, and for her unwavering positive attitude, zest for life and indelible mark on the town she so proudly called home, Centerville, TX.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Julian Grady Wakefield; her mother and father; and brother, Jim Johnston. Jacqueie is survived by her four children: Ann (Tommy) Minze of Centerville; Grady (Leslie) Wakefield of Centerville; John (Robin) Wakefield of Centerville; and Zac (Kristi) Wakefield of Centerville. She also is survived by her grandchildren: Natalie (Chris) Townsend of Austin, TX and their son Jack; Andrea Minze of NYC; Carson (Shelby) Wakefield of Centerville; Caroline Wakefield of Centerville; Tyler Wakefield of Centerville; Mallory Laub of Spring, TX and her daughter, Madison. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Harriet Johnston of Dallas and Wilma Wyle Wingfield of Tomball; brothers-in-law, Larry (Jane) Wakefield of Madisonville and Kenneth (Jayne) Wakefield of Bryan, as well as numerous, beloved nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Laura Phillips for the many years of love and care. In addition, special thanks to Jennifer Stafford for her devoted care and many other incredible caregivers through the years, as well as the wonderful team at Allumine Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to Leon County’s Annual 4th of July Celebration Funtier Days and RVOS Lodge 128 for scholarships.

Services will be at Walters Funeral Home in Centerville, TX at 2 P.M. on Sunday, February 27, 2022. Visitation will begin at noon. Internment will follow the service at Thomason Family Cemetery in the Guy’s Store community.
