Funeral services for Iris Laverne Owens, age 77, of the Flo Community of Leon County have been set for 11 AM, Friday, July 21, 2017 at the Flo Community Baptist Church. Rev. John Murray, pastor, will officiate and burial will be in the Riverside Pioneer Cemetery located in Riverside, Texas. A visitation for Mrs. Owens will be held Thursday evening from 6 PM until 8 PM at the Walters Funeral Home in Centerville.
Iris Owens was born October 9, 1939 in Riverside, Texas to Vernon Lee and Lila (High) Curtis. She worked for many years as an accountant for county government. For the past four years, she and her husband, Gene, lived in the Flo Community having moved there from Crockett where she was a member of the Central Baptist Church.
Iris enjoyed working in the yard and being with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Iris was an excellent cook and could can vegetables. She and Gene would can enormous amounts of food which the family and friends consumed. She was a strong and happy woman and fun to be around. While living in the Flo Community, she and her husband attended the Flo Community Baptist Church. She passed away on July 18, 2017 at her residence.
Iris was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Max Curtis and Melvin Curtis and a grandson , Devon Anderson. Surviving relatives include, husband, Gene Owens of the Flo Community; four sons, Rex Michels (wife, Maru), Roy Michels (wife, Lori) of Houston; Ricky Owens (wife, Donna) and David Owens (wife, Debbie) of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; a daughter, Kayla Stephenson (husband, Chris) of Montgomery; thirteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
All services are under the direction of Walters Funeral Home.
