Gerald McCaskill passed away peacefully on March 18, 2017 in College Station, Texas. He was known for his devotion to his family, friends and his service to the United States and the communities where he lived.
Gerald was born November 4, 1925 to Dan McCaskill and Sallie Tilley McCaskill in Nineveh, TX where he was the youngest of five children.
In 1944, Gerald volunteered for the U.S. Navy. He was assigned to the U.S.S. Tennessee, a battleship that saw action in many major World War II battles. Gerald was on board the U.S.S. Tennessee when it took part in the Battle of Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Surigao Strait. At the end of his military commitment, Gerald returned to Texas. He enrolled at Texas A&M University where he studied agronomy. After his junior year, Gerald traveled to Honduras for an internship at United Fruit Company. While there, he met Shirley Cappel, who quickly became the love of his life.
Gerald graduated from Texas A&M in 1950 and married Shirley later that same year. The couple moved to Hereford, TX where he worked for the SCS and Hereford State Bank.
In 1962, Gerald had the opportunity to join Commercial State Bank in Andrews, TX. He eventually became the banks president. While in Andrews, Gerald was actively involved with the Rotary Club, the Andrews Chamber of Commerce and many other local community organizations. He also served on the Texas Bankers Board of Directors and was a member of the American Bankers Association.
Gerald retired from banking in 1985. He and Shirley moved to College Station, TX in 1990 and Gerald became a member of the Bryan Rotary Club and attended A&M Methodist Church.
Throughout their lives, Gerald and Shirley were avid travelers. Gerald and Shirley travelled across the United States and internationally. They especially enjoyed several trips to Scotland, where they explored the McCaskill heritage and met several Scottish relatives.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and Shirley. He is survived by: his children, Kathleen Schwinkendorf (Jerry), Dan McCaskill (Ann) and David McCaskill (Melissa); 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
The family wants to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. David Hackethorn and the various doctors and medical staff at Baylor Scott and White Health who cared for Gerald. The family also thanks Hospice Brazos Valley for their assistance during Geralds final days.
A memorial service will be held at A&M United Methodist Church, Wednesday, March 22 at 10:00 am. A graveside service will be held at the North Creek Cemetery in Leon County at 2:00 pm later that day. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Geralds memory to the Cal Farley Boys Ranch near Amarillo, Honor Flight Network or A&M United Methodist Church.
Walters Funeral Home in Centerville, Texas is in charge of all arrangements.
