David Wayne Free

Mr. David Wayne Free, a beloved member of the Centerville community, passed away on March 21, 2024, at the age of 80, in Houston, Texas. Born on December 7, 1943, in Pinehurst, Texas, to James Madison and Evelene (Sunday) Free, he was a proud Air Force veteran and the esteemed proprietor of Free & Associates, a prominent surveying firm in the region.


Though David briefly pursued higher education, his true calling was found in the field of surveying, where he dedicated himself for over four decades. David's commitment and expertise were longstanding and widely respected, both professionally and personally. Throughout his career, he served on various committees and boards, contributing significantly to the communities he cherished. He was a member of the Surveyor's Cutoff Score Committee in Austin, Texas, former member of the Wells Fargo Board of Directors in Centerville, Texas and a former Centerville ISD School Board member.


An active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, David was deeply involved in both his faith and community. He generously volunteered his time, coaching sports teams and supporting local initiatives. One of his most cherished roles was being the "Voice of the Centerville Tigers" during football games, a position he held with great pride for thirty-eight memorable years.


Family was paramount to Mr. Free, and he was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Virginia Free. Together, they built a rich life in Centerville, where they raised their family and created lasting memories. Known for his unwavering support and enthusiastic presence at all family events and activities, Mr. Free's influence and love will continue to resonate through generations.


A man of integrity, dedication, and warmth, David Free will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His remarkable spirit and contributions to the community will be eternally remembered as we gather to honor and celebrate his life.


David was preceded in death by both of his parents and siblings, Ruth Pillack, Willie "Buddy" Free and Lloyd Free. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Free of Centerville; sons, Daran Free of Centerville and Cody (Brittney) of Centerville; his adoring grandchildren, Hunter Free (Delaina Locklear) of Friendswood, Sammi Free of Centerville and Claytie Free of Centerville and siblings, Evyonne West of Conroe, Donald Free of Pinehurst, Leon (Mattie Sue) Free of Decker's Prairie and Clyde Wimberley of Pinehurst. David is also survived by numerous extended family and a multitude of friends


A funeral service honoring David's life will take place at the Cowboy Church of Leon County on Monday, March 25, 2024, at 11 A.M. Pastors Tuffy Loftin, Keith Bowman and Mark Gray will officiate the service. A visitation and time of fellowship will be held on Sunday, March 24, 2024, from 5:30 P.M. to 7:30 P.M., at the same location. Mr. Free will be laid to rest in Centerville Cemetery following the service.
