Carolyn Ellis Thomas

Carolyn Ellis Thomas, a cherished member of her family and community, passed away on September 12, 2024, in Centerville, Texas. Born on February 16, 1951, in Ellis County, Texas, she lived a life enriched by her relationships, passions, and experiences. Carolyn was the beloved daughter of Clyde and Merle (Freeze) Gardner, both of whom have predeceased her; along with her first husband, Maurice Ellis; her son, Kyle Ellis; and her half-brothers, Clyde Olin Gardner and Kenneth Gardner.

Carolyn's journey through life began in Milford, Texas, where she was raised. She later came to Centerville in 1970, a move that allowed her to create a loving home for her husband and two boys. Throughout her life, she wore many hats, working in various fields including as a cosmetologist, ranching, as a veterinary technician, and serving the state prison system. Her dedication and compassion were evident in her work, particularly during her time at the prison, where she organized events and offered assistance to those in need, showcasing her generous spirit.

Carolyn was a member of the Cowboy Church of Leon County. She found joy and fulfillment in her faith and community. Her love for life extended beyond her daily responsibilities, as she embraced the joys of shopping on QVC, cruising the seas, and tending to her expansive yard-a true testament to her nurturing nature. Saturdays were special for Carolyn, as she made it a ritual to paint her nails, a small yet meaningful tradition that brought her happiness.

Carolyn leaves behind a loving family who will carry her memory forward including beloved husband, John Richard "J.R." Thomas of Centerville; son, Kevin Ellis and his wife, Karen, of Centerville, Texas; and step-daughter, Kim Thomas of Fairfield, Texas. The legacy of Carolyn's love extends to her grandchildren, Katie Hooks and husband, Riley, of Huntsville, Texas, Kortnie Ellis of Centerville, Texas, Brittni Harris of Tyler, Texas, and Baylee Harris of Fairfield, Texas; as well as her great-grandgirls, Raynie Mae Hooks and Sterling Ann Sanchez.

Carolyn will be remembered not only for her infectious spirit but also for the numerous extended family members and special friends whose lives she touched. Her impact on those around her will be felt deeply as they gather to celebrate her life. A time of visitation will take place on September 15, 2024, from 1 P.M. to 3 P.M., followed by a funeral service at 3 P.M., both held at Walters Funeral Home in Centerville, Texas. Pastor Tuffy Loftin will officiate the service.
